Another current filter in the hi-fi? There are already countless! This is what one or the other will say. On the other hand, if you ask what the ideal current filter for listening to music should look like, it quickly becomes clear that we absolutely had to build these current filters with our technologies.

So why current filters from Vortex HiFi?

The first questions we asked ourselves were: Why even a current filter in the hi-fi? What does a current filter improve and what does it have to do with listening to music?

  • The fact is that the power grid in today's homes has harmonics of the 50 Hz base frequency as well as interference from a few thousand hearts up to well into the megahertz range. In particular, the frequency range above 20.000 Hz is more and more contaminated by switched-mode power supplies (e.g. energy-saving lamps).
  • It is also a fact that classic distortion (i.e. interference up to approx. 500 Hz - that's K10!) Has no or no relevant effect on the sound (see experiment AUDIO).
  • It is also a fact that the interference on the power grids does not change the audio signal of the devices, or hardly changes it, since the power supply units have the task of eliminating all grid disruptions through their various components.
  • Was not considered practically in the Audio experiment the range well above the usual distortion range with its transients from switched-mode power supplies in the range over 20.000 Hz.
  • Was not considered practically in the Audio experiment also the handler who captures her household cabling.

What we can say with a high degree of certainty, however, is that the interference amplitudes outside the audio range (over 20.000 Hz) and the HF range are hardly able to make any relevant changes to the audio signal. The AUDIO testers also came to this point of view in the above-mentioned fundamentals - Experiment.

If you turn your gaze away from the audio signal, which cannot be influenced in a relevant manner, towards influencing people when listening to music, then all of the hearing phenomena can suddenly be explained!

Environmental medicine shows the connection between extremely high harmonics and transients in the range above 4.000 Hz on humans. Like the environmental medical examinations under the heading Dirty Power or Dirty Electricity show, not only change many diseases due to disturbances above 4.000 Hz, but it also explicitly shows disturbances of the hearing system in the form of ear noises. This resulted Prof. Dr. Magda Havas also at a WHO workshop in Prague. By the way, noises in the ears are also explicitly in the RF range from environmental medicine laments.

The metrological basis for the investigation of Magda Havas is based on so-called GS units. 1 GS unit is 24 volts / second, i.e. a rate of rise. This rate of increase of 24 volts / second was chosen so that up to 25 GS units there were practically no significant disturbances to humans, little influences could be expected in a zone from 26 to 50 GS units and in the range above 50 GS units the renovation of the power grid with appropriate filters is recommended.

Above you can see the so-called microsurge meter by Graham and Statzer. You see a measurement at a socket to which an energy-saving lamp with your switched-mode power supply is connected. With 203 GS units a value that shows a strong negative influence on the nervous system and thus also on the hearing system (sound). Because Magda Havas showed that not only ear noises but also confusion and memory loss can occur. This through Dirty power disturbed brain skills are essential for listening to music. Here acoustic patterns have to be recognized and compared with learned patterns. If this does not succeed, the experience becomes unclear and stress arises.

The microsurge meter now shows that not only hi-fi devices, but also electrical consumers in the listening room (also from adjoining rooms) have a significant impact on the hearing system and thus on the differentiated and relaxed music sensation.

Interim conclusion:

Current filters can significantly improve the sound, especially if they work in the frequency range that is particularly biologically sensitive - i.e. in the frequency range above 4.000 Hz up to the mega heart range. Filters that only remove the distortion in the network can, if at all, bring about small sound improvements. The ideal filter should already have good filter effects from 4.000 Hz and work as far as possible into the mega-network range.

In the HiFi area there are active network optimers and passive network optimers. Active network optimers are the only ones able to reduce the distortion of the 50 Hz base frequency and are very expensive. These filters work, if at all, only in the range up to approx. 20.000 Hz. Energy-saving lamps and other loads with switched-mode power supplies work much higher.

The lower TCO 99 spectrum measurement clearly shows that an energy-saving lamp generates particularly strong interference around 60.000 Hz and its harmonics up to approx. 320.000 Hz on the network. In comparison, a halogen lamp (not a switched-mode power supply) generates practically no interference. Hence, these are ideal for listening rooms.

We have never seen a filter like this for a floor lamp. That would also be way too expensive. But your hearing doesn’t care whether it’s poor hearing due to interference from the system or the floor lamp.

The solution would be passive parallel filters. However, in order to fully cover the biologically sensitive area downwards, the filters would have to be very large (large capacitors), which in turn brings with it considerable sound problems via vortices and considerably limits the bandwidth upwards.

That is why we developed our BOB concept. BOB stands for biologically optimized bandwidth and enables perfect filtering precisely in the frequency range in which a medical / biological effect on our nerve and hearing systems has been proven.

That means BOB line filters have the maximum possible sound improvement of a line filter!

On the left you can see the same measurement as above with the Microsurge Meter (203 GS units) and on the right the same measurement only with our Power Optimizer with BOB concept.
We use a very large capacity of 15uF in our parallel filters, which has been compensated in its HF behavior. The parasitic effects of these large capacitors, which are extremely damaging to the sound, are thus reduced to an extremely low level. Norbert Maurer had this compensation method patented in crossovers as early as 1984.

The diagram below shows the basic relationship between the impedance curve  (low impedance equals high filtering ability) and the size of a capacity. The impedance of the 4,7uF capacitor already rises below 600 KHz while the 10nF capacitor only increases the impedance just below 20MHz and remains permanently below the impedance of the 4,7uF capacitor in the HF range. With capacitors that are several times larger, the impedance rises significantly above 100 KHz and therefore only the basic frequency of a switched-mode power supply can be filtered. The harmonics, which are even more critical biologically (because they have a higher frequency), remain poorly or unfiltered.

impedance curve capacitorsThanks to our compensation process, our filters allow rates of increase of over 50.000 volts / uSec while otherwise only around 30 volts / uSec would be possible with large capacitors. During the research into the causes of the “condenser sound”, it was shown over 30 years ago that any further compensation, even up to the GHz range, could be clearly heard. Therefore we compensate as much as possible.

  • Dirty power measurement with and without Power Optimizer 1 filter.

As is often the case with audiophile tubes, the filters are directly dated. In addition, the wiring and the arrangement of components are extremely HF - optimized. After all, what use is a perfect component if the malfunction does not come “via the cable”. The audiophile processing concept is optimized by silver solder as well as informed and silver-plated wires (the two TOP models).

The components are installed in a vibration-damped manner and partially encapsulated. In addition, the filters are price-dependent with all Techniken By mistake, the Vortex HiFi for Eliminate interference and De-stress has available.

Even if we are dealing with high-end products for our filters, a low price setting is extremely important for us, because you need these filters in several places in the listening room and in many places in the house. Therefore, we have dispensed with superfluous, optical and haptic accessories and designed the filters purely functional. This is because, contrary to the statements of the usual filter manufacturers, it is not the hi-fi system but, as the environmental medical examinations show, the entire electrical installation worsens the hearing impression.

That the entire house installation with your interference and its individual components (antennas) is the cause of the reduction in music quality, also shows the daily experienced practice in high end hi-fi. Here we hear differences in sound when changing power cables but also wall sockets and mains fuses. So far, no changes to the audio signal have been measured - but clearly heard. Today these clearly audible sound changes can be explained by the emitted electrosmog and the biological / medical perspective - and that without any signal change!

    I look forward to your new products!

    One question that interests me in connection with the filter:

    A large capacity on the power line also generates large discharge currents (magnetic fields). If you use several of them in the whole house, don't you also have leakage currents in the whole house?

    So can you say that the elimination of interference voltages by far offsets the generation of interference currents when it comes to the impact on people? So accept this?

    1. Hello Mr. M,
      I can answer your question in one sentence or in a book. First in three sentences.

      In the medical examinations I know of, among others by Prof. Dr. Magda Havas, negative effects on clinical pictures, mental abilities and noises in the ears. The currents and magnetic fields that were created when the interference voltages were reduced do not seem to have had a negative effect. During the medical examinations, 20uF Stetzer filters were used (15uF in Europe). Our own examinations with our HRV-EKG also show disturbances in the case of interference voltages and none in the currents that occur in connection with the filtering. From a building biology point of view, the magnetic fields are also classified as uncritical.
      A detailed answer to your question reveals both the scientific limits in the field of environmental medicine and physics. It also shows the, cautiously formulated, problematic handling of the issue of electrosmog by authorities.

      There is no scientifically tenable justification for using a BOB filter. There is also no scientific justification for not using a BOB filter. Since the physical mechanisms of action have not been scientifically clarified, we are dependent on practical medical "tips". These show that disturbances on power grids have a negative impact on people. This related to various clinical pictures but also to mental abilities and noises in the ears. These interferences seem to increase significantly from 2.000 Hz and to become proportionally more critical with the increase in frequency. There is no scientific explanation for these phenomena. Scientific methods fail here because the ceteris paribus condition in connection with people is impossible for a scientific examination due to the diversity of individuals and people under "electrosmog" change permanently - not ceteris paribus. This is impressively demonstrated by the Vienna ATHEM study, in which nerve impulses were permanently changed over a long period of time, even after exposure to HF had long been switched off! So as long as there is no functional scientific model of the influence of fields on people, no serious scientific knowledge can be created. We are therefore dependent on plausible observation of practice - including medical practice.

        As a customer, I know how well your products work, but why is the exciting thing. Also in terms of avoiding further (unconscious) sources of interference, I am looking forward to your further explanations.

        If you have time (ha..ha ..) to come up with other products, there is another glaring antenna in the house with MHz signals: the telephone line with ADSL, etc.

        A technical change in the telephone connection in the house (fiber installation with a telephone network 'simulated' internally by the fiber terminal) brought me massive, previously unknown ear noises. Even our parrot reacts to this with extreme restlessness. I could clearly identify this by disconnecting it. What I can do remains open.

          if I see that correctly you are in New Zealand. But the techniques of the telephone systems should be comparable. I'll look into the problem, as well as the cable TV and TV antennas.

          Influencing the ADSL problem through information is already over the 30th round. I have to clarify to what extent plugs or ground optimizers with corresponding interfaces can be used. Of course, I can easily perform spectral measurements on ADSL lines and their field radiation.
